Overview

Inside The Book

I AM NOT SURE EXACTLY how many people get to live their passion and get paid for it, but I have come to love the creative canvas of interior design. For me it is not just about artwork, color, texture, and lines, or finding the perfect piece of furniture for a room. We leave a mark on the spaces we inhabit, and I believe a room can create a mood, a memory, a movement.

Whenever I have a new assignment or step into a room I think of endless possibilities and I am prompted by one of my favorite quotes by Albert Einstein: Creativity is Intelligence having fun. It reminds me of the enchantment we can create with a living space, but many of the same principles apply to life and the rooms that we inhabit at different times during our lives. As we navigate the path we may lodge in the chamber of challenge or the portal of possibility. Hopefully we spend a lot of time on the veranda of vision watching the horizon of new opportunities or celebrating the rainbows of recovery and renewal. I am always keen to know who will share in the space, what energy do they bring? How much time is spent there? Is it about comfort or is it a space of hard graft and focus?

The world of interior design and how our choices and surroundings reflect our inner world have been a fascination for most of my adult life. For example. how some people can live in cold, clinical settings while in the house next door it’s all frills and florals. The colors and amount of furniture, clutter, or accessories all say something about us.

The value of our spaces, the quality of our spaces determining the quality of our life has proved true for me every time. Inside and out, you are only as good as your last gig. First impressions don’t build relationships and they won’t pay the bills. Your success depends on how you make people feel and how you create the spaces in which they can be their best. Embrace and share your gift, work until it feels right, and build relationships of value. It is where head-to-toe authenticity meets floor-to-ceiling excellence.

In The Spaces Inside and Around Us, You Will Learn

There are many trends in interior design and fashion has a season, but some things are classic. Your essence, drive, purpose, needs, and passions are one of a kind. Timeless inner beauty transcends all else. I will always encourage people to be their own kind of extraordinary.

I was much younger than the rest of my siblings but we grew up in a community-based lifestyle in a very loving and supportive family. Most of my memories of growing up are of being quite comfortable despite the tight financial situation we were in.

If there was work to be done, work would be done. She kept saying: “You cannot do work with your eyes.” It sounded strange, but as I learned later in life it was true. You must get into action to be able to achieve anything because every time you would be discouraged you needed to start all the way from the beginning. And so, we did work.

Most often my subjects involved creating something. I inclined toward designing and creating an item that could be used in the home, improving household efficiency in some way. I always ended up being the designer and led the decoration team. Since primary school every time there was a school event, I would always be called upon to design and decorate. I was a natural and just found it easy, but didn’t realise that I could do something with it.

I was willing to learn exactly what I needed to learn. I was confident in meetings, making connections as soon as I joined that enterprise. This was also the time immediately after I had gotten married. I registered my interior design company at that point and started putting structures in place to create efficiencies. I was there for five years before I founded Indulgence Designs Limited where I work as Director and Head of Marketing.

I feel I am in a place where I am starting to grow and can purposefully make a contribution in my field. One of the things I'm doing is leading Indulgence Blueprint. It's a community where I teach simple interior design lessons that help thousands of members become interior designers.

I remain grateful for the support and the many opportunities that came my way. They helped me to expand my craft and to gain the confidence to try new things in my life, but also in the living spaces and other creative outlets I was involved in. Over to you to make your dreams (and those of your client) a reality.

Being mindful of my thoughts because they create my feelings which in turn create my actions and of course the actions produce the results. And Taking action despite fear or doubt.

Realise that you, only you know why you started in the first place. Take challenges as indicates that you are in the right path. And remember fear is our mind’s way of protecting us.

Interior design is guided by elements and principles. Good design brings together the elements (space, line, forms, light, colour, texture and pattern) to create a room that meets the principles of design (Balance, Emphasis, contrast, rhythm, scale and proportion, Harmony and unity, detail).

There’s more to learn after qualifications are achieved. I advocate working under a seasoned designer in the initial stages of career kick-off. This will help you learn the market, but more so determine your own signature. The end game is that you become a reputable brand.
